Tagliaferri, Cougars highlighted district girls soccer campaign
Colts Neck High School’s
ride to the NJSIAA Group III state championship finals and the
brilliant play of its standout forward, Frankie Tagliaferri, along the
way made the 2014 girls soccer season in the Freehold Regional High
School District another memorable one. Doug Phillips’ Cougars had the school’s best season since 2003, when
that team also made it to the state finals. The Cougars went 20-3. Colts Neck won the Shore Conference B North Division title during the
regular season and reached the Shore Conference Tournament (SCT) finals
before falling to rival Wall High School, 1-0,
The Cougars would have the opportunity to avenge that loss in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III finals, where Tagliaferri’s two goals sparked a 4-2 win. Tagliaferri missed the SCT finals due to her responsibilities with the US U-17 National Team. Tagliaferri booted home two more goals in the Group III semifinals, where the Cougars beat Moorestown High School, 4-1.
In the Group III finals, the Cougars were up against three-time defending champion Northern Highlands Regional High School, which made it four straight with a 4-0 win. That hardly diminished what the Cougars did this year with a roster that included just two seniors and nine sophomores, including Tagliaferri. To say the Cougars have a bright future would be an understatement.
Tagliaferri was the Player of the Year and did everything you could expect of a U.S. National Team member. While her 29 goals and 14 assists speak for themselves, it’s the dynamism she brought to the pitch that was the real difference. Her presence on the field made everyone else better. Teams had to account for her at all times, which opened things for her teammates. And despite her superior skills, her unselfish play was the big reason the Cougars played so well as a team. Colts Neck is the team of the present and the future.
Over in the A North Division, crosstown rivals Freehold High School and Freehold Township High School waged a yearlong battle for the title. As expected, it came down to the final game on the schedule, with Elyse Ingui’s Colonials nailing down the division title. The Colonials went 15-3-3, as they remained one of the Shore’s elite programs.
Although there were no championships for the Patriots, Dave Patterson Freehold Township team remained one of the conference’s powers, going 15-4-1.
Playing in the talent-rich A North Division proved to be a blessing for Courtney Bonura’s Howell High School Rebels (10- 9-1). Playing tough competition each game prepared them well for the postseason, and they made the most of it. Seeded 11th in Central Jersey Group IV, the Rebels made it all the way to the sectional finals, where they made top-seed Hunterdon Central Regional High School sweat before falling, 2-1.
With a young roster, Howell will be one of the teams to watch out for in 2015.
Manalapan High School was its dangerous self, qualifying for the state tournament, where the Braves stunned third-seed Freehold Township in the opening round.
