Johnson, Duffy spark Freehold Boro past Jackson, 1-0

Freehold Boro could fill a compassionate ear with its lengthy ordeals. But one thing the Colonials are not is a side that will bore you with excuses. These days, they can’t afford to waste the breath.

Numbers are depleted on a usually-stocked roster, trimmed not by design but through a rash of crippling injuries, including the absence of junior midfielder Jenna Huskey, a constantly-looming staple in the attack. The type of shape most often discussed by the Boro generally revolves around its organized back line yet, these days, it refers to the importance of fitness.

The rotation is limited, leaving established veterans to shoulder a good deal of the load. SaraGrace Johnson, Sophia Duffy, Emma Smith and Lindsay Cerio don’t seem to mind. All four were instrumental on Monday as Freehold Boro rebounded from an unfamiliar result in its season opener with something more fitting – a 1-0 shutout over host Jackson Memorial.

The Colonials (1-1), who were nicked for just nine goals all of last year and have conceded a total of 15 over the past two season combined while posting 29 clean sheets in that stretch, were pinned with a 5-1 setback by Brick Memorial to open the campaign on Friday, an outcome that didn’t sit well with Duffy and her mates.

“It was really frustrating and embarrassing,” the senior defender said. “It’s hard to tell people to keep it together when everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. There were no excuses.”

And, no reason for any on Monday. Playing with the kind of rigid grit that has always been her trademark, Duffy set a tone in the defensive third similarly subscribed to by Cerio, Smith and Kayla Julianna. The backline limited looks for Jackson (0-1), enabling sophomore keeper Jordan Cerio to need just three saves to notch her first career shutout in her initial start.

“I don’t know where it comes from,” Duffy said of her rugged style. “You can’t go into a tackle unless you know you’re going to get a foot on it and go through it. Someone needs to step up and do that and I think we all do.”

“All I can say is thank God she is on our team,” Freehold Boro coach Elyse Ingui expressed regarding Duffy. “When she goes in for the ball, you know she’s coming out with it. She goes in hard every time and plays with so much heart.”

“She’s probably the toughest girl I know,” Johnson added. “We try and stay away from each other in practice in order not to hurt each other.”

Not a bad idea considering their value to the Colonials. It was Johnson who needed just eight minutes to seize a lead that Freehold Boro never relinquished. Quickly showing to a ball played by sophomore midfielder Kaleigh Rudic, the senior striker turned on a shot from 30 yards out that squeezed just under the crossbar for a sudden 1-0 advantage.

The defense handled the rest, protecting the slim margin for error with maintenance of form that allowed few intrusions. Senior midfielder Ana Mastrokalos, who accounted for three of the four shots Jackson put on frame, unloaded two testers that were denied. The first, a crackling blast in the 17^th minute that rang off the woodwork and the second, a quick, short strike answered by quicker reflexes from Cerio, who managed to deflect the line drive over the top with 10 minutes showing in regulation.

Despite the result, Jackson could feel good about its quality of play. The Jaguars repeatedly connected passes to feet and possessed with confidence. Mastrokalos, junior Daria Jones and freshmen Allison Wanzor and Madison Taylor rhythmically distributed through the neutral third on numerous occasions and pressed Freehold Boro into a defensive posture for most of the final 10 minutes.

“We gave up a goal but I thought we played well,” Jackson coach Drew Gibson noted. “There were a lot of good things to take away from this one. We just have to attack more in the last third and connected those final passes. But, we’ll take away positives, especially for a young group.”

Girls Soccer: 2014 Preseason top 10

The Caseys are the preseason No. 1 girls soccer team for the Asbury Park Press

1. Red Bank Catholic -- The Caseys return six starters from their 2013 Shore Conference Tournament Championship team and the defense will be led by goalie Jackie Robinson, who recorded 14 shutouts, 10 of which were 1-0 games, including the SCT semifinals and SCT final. Other key contributors should be Kiera Farley (Sr. D), Christina Balacco (Sr. M), Kelly Jacoby (Sr. M), Sabrina Graziano (Sr. M), Jenna Mucardo (Sr. M/D), Abby Shroba (Sr. D), Olivia Lucia (Jr. M), Emily Holtz (So. D) and Sophie Demurjian (So. F). Coach Frank Lawrence said this year's team is deeper than last year's 2013 SCT champs, which should scare every opponent in the Shore Conference.
2. Toms River South – The Indians made it to the NJSIAA Group III state finals last season and should once again be a contender for a state title in addition to an SCT title. Taylor Troutman (Sr. F) is the team's leader and she had 29 goals and 23 assists in 2013 and enters her senior year with career totals of 63 goals and 32 assists. Returning starters Samantha Bahr (Sr. D), Tori Babock (Sr. D), Charlie Slavick (Jr. M) and Taylor Dean (So. G), make the defending Class A South champion Indians the team to beat in Class A South again this year.
3. Central Regional --The Golden Eagles surprised everyone last season with their 19-3 record and that memorable run to the SCT final as the No. 13 seed. Underdogs no more, the Golden Eagles will depend on their two captains senior forward Amanda Carolan and senior midfielder Erin Trapp to lead them to potentially back-to-back Class B South titles and deep runs in the SCT and NJSIAA tournaments.
4. Freehold - The Colonials are now in the Class A North division, which translates into a little bit harder of a regular season schedule, and have seven key players returning including senior defender Sophia Duffy (committed to Seton Hall University), senior forward SarahGrace Johnson, senior defender Lindsay Cerio and senior goalie Meghan Hurler. The Colonials have been knocking on the door of the SCT title the last few years and are once again a contender for this year's title.
5. Freehold Township-- The Patriots, last year's Class A North champions, will have a difficult path to repeating as Freehold joins an already competitive division. Nevertheless, the Patriots have star players junior defender Caleigh Farrell (University of New Hampshire), senior forward/midfielder Maria D'Amico (Wagner College), senior defender Sam Lotti (Townson University) and junior midfielder Nicole Whitley back for their Class A North title defense.
6. Wall - The Crimson Knights return eight starters including Heather Arbachesky, Abigayle Musto, Danielle Gardner and Alex Panasuk from last year's team that went 18-5. Arbachesky is the team's leader as she had 19 goals and 9 assists last year and Gardner is committed to Townson University. Wall finished second in the Class B North division last year, so keep an eye on Crimson Knights as a contender for this year's Class B North division title.
7. Rumson-Fair Haven-- The Bulldogs are the reigning NJSIAA Group II state champions and have only lost one senior from last year's 16-7-1 squad. The Bulldogs have seven key returners that are seniors including senior midfielder Meagan McGurl (Lafayette College) and senior forward Janie DeVito. The NJSIAA title defense won't be easy but the Bulldogs will be prepared with a difficult Class A Central schedule.
8. St. Rose -- The Purple Roses made it to the NJSIAA Non-Public B State Final last season and return six key players including senior goalie Jordan Nash (21 starts, 0.71 GAA, 13 shutouts, 125 saves), senior defender Kathleen Dailey, senior center back Shannon Burns (4 goals, 5 assists), junior forward Seneca Kinn-Gurzo (10 goals, 9 assists), sophomore center midfielder Erin Dailey (4 goals, 3 assists) and junior center midfielder Ryan McCurry (1 goal, 5 assists). The Purple Roses tied with Mater Dei Prep for the Class B Central division title last season and St. Rose is the top contender for this year's division title.
9. Shore Regional - The Blue Devils forged a 1-1 double overtime tie with Glen Ridge to become the NJSIAA Group 1 state co-champions last year. But this year, Shore has its sights set on winning the Group 1 title outright. Shore returns talented players in Samantha McDonough (Sr. F), Katie Colaguori (Jr. G), Katie Stephens (So. F) and Devon McDonough (So. M). In addition, the Blue Devils will battle with St. Rose for the Class B Central division title this year.
10. Toms River North - The Mariners went 15-5 last year and finished second in the Class A South division behind Toms River South. Toms River North returns Alyssa Dell'Acqua (Sr. G), Ali Hicks (Sr. D), Kate Galagno (Sr. M) and Emilie Gilbert (Sr. F) as the Mariners, who won the 2012 SCT title, make another run for the SCT title this year and for the Class A South division title.

Highlights: On Oct. 25, Holtz's three assists led the Colonials past Rumson-Fair Haven, 3-0, in a SCT first-round game. On Oct. 28, Holtz had one assist as the Colonials defeated Wall, 2-0, in a SCT quarterfinal game. For the season, Holtz had five goals and 18 assists and she has been a captain the last two years and has been the core of the Colonials’ squad for the past three years. She will play soccer at Bucknell University next fall.

SOPHIA DUFFY

School: Freehold
Year: Junior
Position: Defender
Highlights: Duffy played center back for the Colonials this season. She had two goals and four assists this year and helped Freehold reach the semifinals of the Shore Conference Tournament. Duffy routinely guarded an opposing team’s top scorer.

Colonials, Patriots dominate All-District girls soccer team

I t was another championship-laden season for girls soccer in the Freehold Regional High School District (FRHSD).  Freehold High School and Freehold Township High School survived season long battles to capture their respective division crowns.  Elyse Ingui’s Colonials were in charge of Shore Conference B North throughout the season, but the title was still not decided until the next-to-last game of the season when they beat Wall High School, 2-0. Freehold advanced to the semifinals in both the Shore Conference Tournament and NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV tournament.

Leading the News Transcript’s 2013 All-FRHSD Girls Soccer Team are Freehold’s Meghan Holtz (midfield), Sophia Duffy (defense), Jenna Huskey (midfield), Christina Stabile (defense), Lindsay Cerio (defense) and Julia Orrico (midfield); and Freehold Township’s Adrian Vitello (defense), Nicole Whitley (midfield), Madison Dunn (forward), Olivia Pinto (forward), Lacy Powell (defense) and Sam Lotti (defense).  Completing the team are Manalapan’s Mary Grace Monahan (forward), Catherine Traina (defender), Brianna Nealon (goalie) and Jessica Donnelly (midfield); Howell’s Jessica Vigna (midfield) and Rebecca Hamilton (defense); Colts Neck’s Amanda Visco (midfield), Bridgette King (forward) and Halley Cartas (defense); and Marlboro High School’s Victoria Metelkine (midfield).

According to Ingui, Holtz has been the “core of the Colonials for the last three seasons.” The Bucknell University-bound midfielder uses her vision, footwork and raw talent to create opportunities for her teammates. She was one of the Shore’s top playmakers with 18 assists to go along with five goals. Holtz was the main reason Freehold was able to play a possession game.
Sophomore Huskey has shown a talent for scoring goals. Her raw speed is the reason she can break free from defenders. It helped her score a team-high 18 goals this year.

Defense is Freehold’s trademark, and junior Cerio is the anchor. She’s already a three-year starter. She is good in the air with her height and sees the field well. Orrico (five assists), committed to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), used her versatility to help the Colonials out in a variety of defensive positions. Stabile (one goal, two assists), also headed to TCNJ, has great anticipation and is very good in transition bringing the ball upfield.  Duffy (two goals, four assists) is a tenacious defender who denies forwards the opportunity to get the ball.
