Colonials lead the way on All-District girls soccer team
Freehold High School’s undefeated regular season highlighted what was another memorable girls soccer season for the Freehold Regional High School District.
Besides the undefeated regular season and repeat Shore Conference B North Division championship, head coach Elyse Ingui’s Colonials reached the finals of the Shore Conference Tournament before falling to Toms River High School North.
Defense was Freehold’s forte, led by goalie Sara Cobb, who registered 15 clean sheets during the season to lift her career total to 47. She was helped out in front by defenders Lindsay Cerio, Sophia Duffy and Chelsi Bender. Hayley Rice, Meghan Holtz and Sarah Grace Johnson led the offense as the Colonials went 15-2-2.
Over in the A North Division, Freehold Township High School, Colts Neck High School, Howell High School and Manalapan High School all had a shot at claiming the championship because the race was so wide open. But when the dust settled, it was coach David Patterson’s Patriots who wore the crown. Defender Adrian Vitello and versatile midfielders Meg Kowalski and Gabby Davis were the key players. Madison Dunn and Nicole Whitley led the offense. The Patriots finished with a 9-5-4 mark. When it came to the state tournament, it was coach Doug Phillips’ Cougars (14- 7-1) who made the biggest splash. The young Colts Neck team, with four freshmen in the lineup, upset Freehold in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III quarterfinals and made it to the championship game, where they lost to Princeton High School. The young players that made an impact were sophomore Halley Cartas and freshman Amanda Visco, who were the team’s leading scorers. Goalie Lauren Zborovancik had a school record 10 shutouts. In front of her, Danielle Krachie anchored the defense.
Howell (8-6-4) was one game behind Freehold Township in A North. Jessica Vigna was the Rebels’ MVP after scoring four game-winning goals during the season. Sisters Rebecca (defense) and Brittany Hamilton (midfield) controlled the middle of the field for the Rebels.
Manalapan (9-6-3) went about its usual winning ways in 2012. Danielle Rizzo, Catherine Traina and Mary Grace Monahan were the team’s sparks.
At Marlboro, Catherine Chukuka concluded an outstanding four-year career.
