Colonials top seed, Patriots No. 3 in girls soccer conference tournament

By TIM MORRIS
Staff Writer
Freehold High School and Freehold Township High School began the girls soccer season against each other back in September.
Two months later, these two talented teams could be playing for the Shore Conference Tournament (SCT) championship, a crown both school have won previously.
The B North Division champion Colonials were give the top seed for the SCT, while Freehold Township, the A North winners, were seeded third. Since they are on opposite sides of the bracket, they can’t meet until the finals on Nov. 2.
Of course, there is a lot of work to be done before then.
Freehold, runner-up to Toms River High School North last year, started its tournament off with a much-needed 3-0 win over No. 16 seed Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School in Freehold on Oct. 25.
After winning their first 14 games and clinching the division title, the Colonials lost back-to-back games, first to Ocean Township High School in double-overtime, 2-1, and then to Bishop George Ahr High School, 1-0.
Head coach Elyse Ingui was glad to see the Colonials’ offense come to life against the Bulldogs. Meghan Holtz assisted on all three Colonials tallies against Rumson-Fair Haven, which came in the first half. Sarah Grace Johnson, Jenna Huskey and Ashley Latona were the goal scorers for Freehold, and Meghan Hurler stopped three shots in picking up the team’s 12th clean sheet of the season.
All that Freehold got for that win was another matchup with Wall High School, their longtime rivals. The Crimson Knights, seeded eighth, defeated No. 9 Manalapan (9-5) in a penalty kick shootout. The teams went through regulation and overtime without scoring a goal, with Wall (13-3) winning on penalty kicks, 4-2.
The Colonials beat the Crimson Knights, 1-0, in Wall and 2-1 in double overtime in Freehold.
Freehold Township got all it wanted and more from No. 19 seed Brick Memorial High School (8-9). The Patriots needed two overtimes to put away the pesky Mustangs, 3-2.  Nicole Whitley scored twice, and Madison Dunn delivered the golden goal in the second overtime. Whitley scored in the final minute just to send the game to overtime.  Mimi Nowak assisted on two goals, including Dunn’s game winner. Sam Lotti assisted on Whitley’s game-tying goal.
The Patriots (11-3-2) are looking to use the toughness they gained from surviving A North to their advantage in the SCT. They were scheduled to play Red Bank Catholic (RBC) High School, the sixth seed, on Oct. 28 in Freehold.  RBC took out No. 11 seed Howell High School, 1-0, on Oct. 25.
Howell did not have a first-round bye and beat Pinelands Regional High School, 3-1, in its opening-round game on Oct. 23.  Kristen Carrete, Darian Marsh and Jessica Vigna were the goal scorers for the Rebels (9-4-2).  Colts Neck (8-6-1) beat Point Pleasant Borough High School, 1-0, in overtime in its SCT opening-round game. Alison Russo, assisted by Bridgette King, scored the game’s only goal in the first overtime. Keeper Alyssa Caufield stopped three shots in earning the shutout.  The Cougars, the 12th seed, fell to No. 5 Holmdel on Oct. 25, 1-0.
The SCT semifinals are on Oct. 30 at the Neptune High School varsity field. The finals are also in Neptune, on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
