SEEDS
1-Old Bridge, 2-East Brunswick, 3-Hunterdon Central, 4-Montgomery, 5-Freehold Borough, 6-Jackson, 7-Freehold Township, 8-South Brunswick, 9-Manalapan, 10-Howell, 11-Monroe, 12-Hillsborough, 13-Colts Neck, 14-Brick Memorial, 15-Sayreville, 16-West Windsor North.
FAVORITE
This loaded section features four members of The Star-Ledger Top 20 and that list doesn't include East Brunswick, a team which just beat No. 12 Old Bridge in the GMC Tournament final.
A wide open section, Hunterdon Central (16-3-1) will be listed at the favorite. The Red Devils, No. 6 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, are coming off the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament championship and have won five in a row since losing to 11th-ranked Bridgewater (1-0), a contender in North Jersey 2, Group 4.
CONTENDERS
No. 8th-ranked Montgomery (10-4-1), the defending Group 4 champion, has lost two of its last three games, but the Cougars are very battle-tested playing in the rugged Skyland Conference, which features five Top 20 teams. The health of Allison DeLuca (18 goals, 11 assists), who injured herself in the HWST final, will be a concern. Montgomery, after losing to Hunterdon Central 3-2 on opening day in Skillman, won the rematch, 4-1 in Flemington.
East Brunswick (17-4-1), 2012 runner-up Old Bridge (16-2) and 20th-ranked Freehold Boro (16-3) also have to be considered a contender in the 16-team bracket which features 13 teams with a winning record.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Colby Ciarrocca of Montgomery is the reigning State Player of the Year. In four seasons on the varsity, the strong, fast and skilled Ciarrocca has 70 goals and 42 assists and has helped lead the school to a record of 62-13-7, two Somerset County Tournament titles, two Central Jersey, Group 4 titles and the 2012 Group 4 championship.
Sydney Rosa is the latest in a long line of prolific forwards to play the starring role for East Brunswick, the state's most storied program. Despite battling back from a life-threatening illness at the beginning of the 2012 season, Rosa has recorded 47 goals and 24 assists in a three-year career. East Brunswick is 47-10-4 with two GMC Tournament titles the past three seasons.
