Elyse Ingui brings a veteran Freehold High School girls soccer team into the Shore Conference A North Division. Freehold, which has long been a Shore area and state power, will now be playing its crosstown rival Freehold Township High School, as well as Freehold Regional High School District rivals Manalapan High School, Marlboro High School and Howell High School, in games with division championship implications.
“We are looking forward to the challenge and opportunity to play the teams in A North,” Ingui said.
The Colonials have long dominated the B North Division and repeated as champions last year in a season during which they went 17-4 and were the top seed in the Shore Conference Tournament (SCT). Ingui stated that Freehold’s expectations remain the same: compete for the division, SCT and state titles. She has an experienced team with seven well-tested seniors, led by forward SarahGrace Johnson (12 goals, seven assists), defender Lindsay Cerio and goalkeeper Meghan Hurler (14 shutouts). Sophia Duffy (two goals, four assists), Carley Sliwicka, Allyson McNamee (one goal, five assists) and Kayla Julianna complete the senior presence on the team. Duffy is headed to Seton Hall University. High-scoring midfielder Jenna Huskey (18 goals, one assist) is back at midfield with fellow juniors Ashley Latona (seven goals, five assists) and Emma Smith (two goals, two assists).
Defense has long been the Colonials’ trademark, and it will be again with the return of Cerio, Duffy, Smith and Hurler.
The Colonials will miss the 18 assists graduated Meghan Holtz gave them last fall, but there is plenty of firepower returning with Huskey and Johnson. Newcomers include senior Kristen Poskaitis (midfield); juniors Samantha Wiles (midfield) and Jennifer Finnegan (goalkeeper); sophomores Kaleigh Rudic (midfield), Gianna Ritornaro (midfield), Olivia Duffy (forward) and Erin Reidy (midfield); and freshmen Amana Tran (defense) and Taylor Rupprecht (defense).
Notes: Freehold and Freehold Township played the first of their two division meetings on Sept. 12, with the Colonials prevailing in overtime, 3-2, in Freehold. After a scoreless first half, each team struck for two goals in the second half. Sasso and Whitley tallied for the Patriots, while and Cerio and Poskaitis scored for the Colonials. Freehold, which has been the master of overtime in the last several years, continued its magic in the extra session. Johnson scored the game-winner off a feed from Latona. The teams will play again in Freehold Township on Oct. 15, but there is a lot of soccer to be played before then, with Manalapan and Howell waiting to make their own statements.
