NJ girls soccer power rankings (9/25/12)

Rankings

RANK TEAM REC LW COMMENTS
1 Northern Highlands 5-0 1 Clare Shea has been a consistent force within the Highlanders’ offense. The junior midfielder has registered at least one goal in all five matches, including a pair of strikes on Thursday in a 7-0 victory over Hackensack.
2 Montgomery 5-1-1 2 An organized defense has played especially stiff over the last two weeks. Junior defender Michelle Wiltse and classmate Rebecca Ravitz, a stingy netminder, are integral pieces of a unit that yielded three goals over the last five matches against tough competition.
3 Livingston 5-0-1 3 The Essex County power has outscored its last four opponents, 17-0. What has made the production so thorough is how many sources get involved in the offense. Midfielder Jordy Bonvini has accounted for four goals and an assist within that span.
4 Ramapo 5-1 5 The Raiders bounced back from their 4-1 setback to top-ranked Northern Highlands with a 3-0 showing against Indian Hills, marking their fourth shutout. Senior Tori Woetzel maintains the defense’s shape in the middle.
5 Ridge 5-1-2 6 Alex Weyrauch has been a handful to contain. The elusive junior midfielder constantly probes the final third for opportunities and has cashed in on her chances with a goal in each of the last three contests -victories over Watchung Hills, Hillsborough and Summit.
6 Piscataway 6-0-1 10 Those intent on focusing added defensive attention toward South Carolina-bound Daija Griffin are starting to understand the Chiefs’ offense has a deep reservoir of able finishers surrounding the senior striker. Amber Adams (three goals, two assist) and Kelsey Nugent (five goals, three assists) each stepped up to deliver a goal in a 2-1 triumph over Old Bridge on Friday, the first game this season in which the dynamic Griffin failed to score.
7 Red Bank Catholic 6-0 11 Scoring chances against the Caseys have been few and far between. Senior Marina Davi has played a role in three clean sheets while the midfield corps of Grace Correll, Grace Fallon, Liz Thoreson and Christina Balacco have made seizing control of the neutral third a top priority.
8 Freehold Boro 7-0 13 The Colonials passed two big tests last week, registering wins against Wall and St. John Vianney by identical 2-0 scores. Freshman Jenna Huskey has integrated into the attack rather smoothly. She delivered a goal in both triumphs.
9 Glen Rock 7-0 14 The Panthers are loaded with a physicality and athleticism to complement an attractive style that keeps everyone involved going forward. They can flood the offensive third with confidence knowing the backline of Caroline Taylor, Maggie Egan, Emily Rogan and Seton Hall-bound Sarah Fiorino will thwart just about anything that comes its way.
10 Watchung Hills 4-2 9 Senior Jessica Heifetz came through with a golden goal in the second overtime (her six strike of the season) to lift Watchung Hills to its biggest win thus far, a 4-3 decision over Pingry, on Saturday.
11 Bridgewater-Raritan 3-2-1 15 After absorbing a tough 2-1 loss to No. 2 Montgomery on Thursday, Bridgewater-Raritan bounced back in resounding fashion. Junior Allison Morgan deposited her second goal of the match in the 89th minute to snap a 2-2 tie and send the Panthers past Immaculate Heart Academy, 3-2.  Erin Sullivan added a score and Brianna Petro collected two assists.
12 IHA 3-2 12 Alexandria Mesropyan has embraced her role as a central figure in the offense. The sophomore forward has accounted for five goals and two assists within an attack scoring at an impressive 4.5 goals per game.
13 Pingry 3-2 4 Just how strong is the Delaware Division of the Skyland Conference? Pingry, the defending division champ currently sits 1-2 in league play following its 4-3 overtime loss to No. 10 Watchung Hills. Expect the Big Blue to rebound fast behind the speed and efficiency of Tanika Roach (four goals) and creativity of Rachel Corboz (two goals, two assists).
14 Scotch Plains 7-0 - The Raiders have been dominant in all three areas of the field. The defense, anchored by Juli Glover, Alyssa Riporti, Christine Miklas and keeper Taylor Sebolao, owns five shutouts. The midfield features the selfless awareness of Louisville recruit Christy Monroy (three goals, six assists) while sophomores Tori Baliatico and Corina Checcio have teamed with senior Leah Salituro total 11 goals.
15 Steinert 5-0 - Senior Darah Wagner has made controlling the midfield her foremost priority and the Spartans have thrived . Wagner has three goals and three assists while forward Adrianna Boucher has found the back of the net five times.

Duo helps Freehold Boro blank Ocean

Duo helps Freehold Boro blank Ocean

Lindsay Cerio covers ground in the heart of Freehold Borough’s defense at a pretty brisk pace.
A ball served to a forward springs the sophomore to challenge the approaching pass with a quick step and even faster distributing touch out the back that is delivered with an insightful idea. On the rare occasion her assistance is needed, she can range wide to provide support for her outside defenders when something begins to brew on the wings.
But, if you really want to gauge the truest sense of the wheels on the center back, just give up a restart in the proximity of the net and watch Cerio practically run out of her skin for a rare chance to get an offensive look on goal.
“I love getting forward,” Cerio said. “Playing defense, I never get many opportunities to score, so when one presents itself, I like to take advantage of it.”
It’s not like Freehold Borough is starving for goal scorers. One of the greatest traits of the Colonials is the extent of pressure they can apply on an opposing defense simply with the numbers available to thrust into the attack. The wealth of finishing presence is exactly the reason why 10 different players have been able to dontate at least a goal to the 26 accumulated so far this season.
But, sensing the understandable overload Ocean Township had to be experiencing, trying to account for all that weaponry, Cerio coyly hustled toward a spot at the back post and snapped home a header in the 28th minute that sparked a lightning-quick outburst.
“I took a cut and went and I think they lost sight of me,” said Cerio, who was unattended eight yards out and long enough to steer her nod into the back of the net.
SarahGrace Johnson added an insurance goal a minute later and Cerio retreated back to galvanize a defense that limited Ocean to just two shots as unbeaten Freehold Borough, No. 13 in the MSG Varsity New Jersey Top 15, registered a 2-0 victory over Ocean on Monday in Freehold.
While the contribution Cerio made in the final third was appreciated, it held no greater weight than the defense she was an instrumental part.
The Colonials flat-back four system with Cerio and Sophia Duffy in the middle, flanked by Chesli Bender and Christina Stabile on the outsides, has a number of redeeming qualities. Besides its rigid shape and overall speed of the group, Cerio has size in the center, making the idea of playing over the top of her a risky proposition. Duffy is always ready to mark runners in the center while Bender and Stabile neutralize any presence of speed with their own fleet feet and are also both timely in terms of making strong tackles on the ball.
Sophomore Taylor Racioppi made a bid in the fifth minute to pierce the Freehold Borough defense when she cracked a  25-yard shot that keeper Sarah Cobb helped over the crossbar. It wasn’t until 12 minutes remained in the match that Racioppi would craft one last ditch attempt at a goal only for it to be handled by Cobb.
As for its scheme on offense, Freehold openly looked from the inside out, getting balls into space, allowing junior outside midfielder Hayley Rice to collect with space and breakdown defenders on the ball. Once she did, Rice routinely made the Colonials dangerous, once that eventually led to Johnson’s team-leading ninth goal of the season.
“We try to start in the middle, look wide and then get it in,” Rice said. “From there, it’s our forwards to finish.”
Rice sent one of those feeds across in the 29th minute. Her turf-hugging pass was one-timed by Johnson to extend the lead to 2-0.
“The defenders are more concerned with looking at Hayley and the other outside mids,” Johnson said. “That really opens up the middle.”
Freehold Borough (7-0) outshot Ocean (7-2), which was coming off a 1-0 upset of No. 11 Red Bank Catholic, on Saturday.
