Colonials head into conference tourney as B North champions

BY TIM MORRIS Staff Writer
The Freehold High School girls soccer team will roll into the Shore Conference Tournament as the undefeated champions of the B North Division.
Coach Else Ingui’s Colonials (13-0, 12- 0 in B North) clinched a second straight division title on Oct. 10 when they defeated Wall High School, 2-1. Wall fell to 9-2 in the division with both of its losses coming to Freehold.
The goal that was scored by the Crimson Knights was the first goal surrendered by the Colonials all season. Wall’s Casey Zalewski had the distinction of being the first player to get a shot past Freehold’s Sara Cobb in 2012. Zalewski’s goal tied the match in the second half after Julia Orrico had scored in the first half for the Colonials.
The Colonials did not let the goal get them off their game. In the 75th minute of the 80-minute match, Meghan Holtz responded for the Colonials with the gamewinner.
“This season has been a lot of fun for everyone involved in the program,” Ingui said. “Giving up a goal isn’t the worst thing in the world, especially when it shows us the girls can rebound from giving one up.”
Now it is on to the post-season tournaments. Last season saw Freehold make an early exit in the Shore Conference Tournament and lose at home to Matawan Regional High School in the Central Jersey Group III state sectional tournament championship game.
“I believe this team is better prepared just because of experience, as well as a desire to want it,” Ingui said. “It’s different because this year they came in hungry and with a sour taste in their mouths from the loss to Matawan. They know they can compete with anyone and they are willing to give it their all to be successful.”
SarahGrace Johnson has scored 12 goals to lead the team and she has had plenty of support from Hayley Rice and Cori Ahde, who have scored eight and six goals, respectively. Holtz has seven goals and leads the team in assists with 12. In all, 14 players have scored for Freehold.
Cobb has been outstanding in goal and Lindsay Cerio, Chelsei Bender, Christina Stabile and Sophia Duffy have done a flawless job protecting their goalie by denying shots on goal. Cobb only needed to make two saves in the win at Wall that locked up the B North crown. Freehold will be looking for a top four seed in the conference tournament.
The tournament begins on Oct. 17 with first round games. The second round is set for Oct. 19 and the quarterfinals are scheduled for Oct. 22. The semifinals, Oct. 24, and the final, Oct. 27, will be played at Neptune High School’s varsity field off Route 33, Neptune.
Defending tournament champion Freehold Township (8-2-2), Howell (6-2-2) and Manalapan (7-3-2) will be awaiting their match-ups. The tournament was seeded on Oct. 15.
The A North race remains a three-way battle among Freehold Township, Howell and Manalapan. Starting the week, all three teams had two losses and two ties in division play. Freehold Township at 8-2-2 has completed division play, while Manalapan and Howell were set to play a match in Howell in which the winner would earn a share of the title.
Howell beat Manalapan, 2-1, on Oct. 9 on a pair of goals by Jessica Vigna. That win by the Rebels left the three teams with two losses and two ties in division play.
