Cobb opens the door for Colonials
After two even opportunities of penalty kicks on Monday, Freehold’s senior keeper Sara Cobb lunged to her right and punched Manalapan’s third attempt away opening the door to victory in a Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinal.
Delaney Boyer and Cori Ahde responded with successive match-clinching conversions as the top-seeded Colonials (15-0) were able to outlast the No. 8 Braves (9-5-3) with a 4-2 edge in penalty kicks after the two teams played a scoreless match. Freehold will play fifth-seeded Red Bank Catholic in a semifinal.
Freehold’s Lindsay Cerio and Ashley Latona converted penalty kicks, as did Manalapan’s Jessica Donnelly and Erin O’Grady before Cobb’s stop, and a shot that missed high over the crossbar. Then Boyer and Ahde finished the job.
Cobb was pivotal in the first half, when she knocked away a pair of breakaway shots to preserve the scoreless tie. She finished with four saves in the game. Manalapan’s junior keeper Brianne Nealon stopped all 10 shots she faced.
