Have we met: Not this season, but, up until this year, Wall and Freehold
Boro were heated rivals who squared off a minimum of twice a year in B North,
including three encounters a year ago, all won by Boro. In fact, the Colonials
have won the last five meetings and advanced on penalty kicks at Wall’s expense
in the 2011 NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 semifinals. Wall last tasted victory
over Freehold Boro on Sept. 19, 2011 with a 1-0 decision.
What to watch for: These are two proud defenses that don’t take kindly to
intruders. However, each must brace for the numbers each that will be
cautiously pushed in their direction. Sixteen different players have
contributed either a goal or an assist for Wall while 15 have gotten involved
in either finishing or setting up a strike for the Colonials. Positional lables
should by no means paint a picture of limited maneuvering from either team.
Jessica Maywalt of Wall and Lindsay
Cerio of Freehold Boro are lynchpins in their respective defensive thirds yet
both pose threats from distance, particularly on restarts. Cerio is second to
midfielder Ashley Latona in goals for the Colonials while Maywalt’s five
assists speak to her facilitating for Wall.
Up front, Wall offers a blend of
youth and experience in senior Heather Arbachesky, a poised veteran, and
freshman Amy Paternoster, a polished newcomer with a team-best eight goals and
member in the U.S. national pool. The Crimson Knights support the duo with an
active midfield featuring junior Nora Burdge, who works both ends of the field
and tops the side with seven assists, sophomore Natalie Sprengel, a dangerous
presence along the width, junior Katie Hyde and senior Abigayle Musto.
Senior SarahGrace Johnson can be
physical en route to goal up top for Freehold Boro, balanced by her finesse
framing the net while Latona, Kaleigh Rudic and Megan Hurler embody the work
rate of the Colonials’ midfield. Where the Boro is dangerous is how easily
defenders like junior Emma Smith incorporate themselves into the offense once
control in the final third is attained without compromising their
responsiblities at the other end.
Both sides have quality keepers.
Wall’s Alex Panasuk and Freehold Boro’s Jordan Cerio are well schooled in the art
of net coverage and are invaluable in the tight organization of their back
lines.
